2021 Reviews – He’s All That

posted in: 2021 Reviews, Netflix | 24

I almost didn’t rewatch She’s All That because I’m familiar enough with the premise through Not Another Teen Movie 😏 But I’m glad I did, because you have to, if you want to understand all the intricacies within recreating a new narrative from yesteryear, gender-swapped or not. 1999 gets praised constantly for bringing us a great year in cinema, that includes The Matrix, Fight Club and The Sixth Sense, but how about the teen rom-com genre alone – She’s All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Never Been Kissed, Election and American Pie. Wow; no wonder the cynics out there saw it ripe to spoof it all in Not Another Teen Movie. They be coming out like Marvel movies!

He’s All That sees popular high-school senior Padgett Sawyer (Addison Rae) find out that her boyfriend Jordan (Peyton Meyer) is cheating on her, very publicly, when her friend continues a live-stream during a surprise visit. Despite becoming a momentary laughing stock, Padgett is still popular enough that she believes she can create a new boytoy, to stand by her side and win Prom King, while she wins Prom Queen. Her friend Alden (Madison Pettis) takes that bet, providing that she can pick the boy, and she chooses loner photographer Cameron Kweller (Tanner Buchanan), who’s so unpopular that he doesn’t even have an online social status 😱 This is not what Padgett was expecting, but a bet is a bet and she’s up for the challenge! As Padgett and Cameron begin to hang out together, they may eventually discover that they are about to change each other for the better. He’s All That is directed by Mark Waters.

He’s All That essentially completely copies the structure of the original, working around updating references to the modern day, and flipping the girl to be the jock, and the boy to be the geek. I think it’s fair enough for this style of project, but the only thing I was shocked to see neglected, was a slow and elegant walk down the stairs after Cameron’s transformation; instead, he reveals the new ‘him’ through a doorway. The movie has a golden opportunity to be acceptably cliché and doesn’t take it; c’mon! A glaring knock on the original, and something you’ve always had to overlook for the movie magic to work, is that the girl chosen for the bet is obviously gorgeous (even with her ‘glasses and a ponytail’), and I can only assume the same thing goes here – I’ve long given up thinking I understand what makes a man attractive; but Cameron’s got good teeth, and I didn’t think the brooding-beanie combination was a complete turn-off, no? But it doesn’t matter; once Padgett discovers those abs, it’s pretty much game-over anyway, isn’t? Yet, these movies are about more than just looks, as the unpopular one has to navigate their own feelings and realise that being social is as easy as opening up again. Again, I thought this movie handled it well – it substitutes in Cameron’s little sister Brin (Isabella Crovetti) as the emotional lever to help pry Cameron open again after Padgett has led the charge, and it makes sense to an audience that has spent more time with Brin and knows her well, opposed to the emotionally-distant father in the original. Another interesting minor change is that Cameron and Padgett’s ex-boyfriend Jordan now have a physical confrontation at a party, where Cameron comes out on top (minus a camera), and that’s what leads to him gaining the popularity necessary to challenge Jordan for Prom King.

Compared to the other God-awful gender-swap remake I can recall from recent years, What Men Want, I think director Waters has got his eye in and develops a winner; but it’s not really for me to judge, as I haven’t been a teenager for ten years, and the movie isn’t really for me. I wonder if the critic’s low scores are somewhat contributed to by a lack of embrace for social media storms; an element that turned me off too, but is more relevant to today’s teenagers. All the ‘Real World references are now live-streaming and pop-up music careers, and instead of Padgett learning to make her own choices, like she would have in the nineties, she now learns not to be so shallow, and only post to social media with substance… even though… she was kind’ve, providing for her family. Critically, I don’t think the dialogue is as sharp, or the jokes as strong as the original, but that could be nostalgia speaking, and time will be a better judge of that. But it’s not like She’s All That is any gem anyway; it’s a fun popcorn flick, and since this movie is merely aiming to replicate it, then I think it’s a success.

And when that Sixpence None the Richer remix kicked in, I was fangirling like a hopeless nineties tragic, who’s not afraid to admit it – 🎶 Kiss me, out of the bearded barley! 🎶 I love that Rachael Leigh Cook gets a small part in this, after starring in the original. And Matthew Lillard’s principal character threatens to dance the night away, harkening back to his famed movie moment, but he wouldn’t want to show up the next generation. After rewatching She’s All That, I was surprised by how many performers went on to have noteworthy careers – Freddy Prince Jr., Paul Walker, Matthew Lillard, Kieran Culkin, Gabrielle Union, Anna Paquin, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, Clea Duvall, Usher Raymond and even Elden Henson, who got to be amazing as Foggy Nelson on Daredevil. With the way streaming is these days, film and television roles are a-plenty, and it’s going to be interesting to see where these actors end up in the decades to come – that’s the true comparison.
